Our Story
Driving change through health, education, and opportunity.
Since 1992
In the heart of South Hayward, the Glad Tidings Community Development Corporation (GTCDC) stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. Founded in 1992 by Bishop J.W. Macklin, we embarked on a mission to reclaim a community ensnared by drugs, crime, and poverty. Today, GTCDC is a testament to what’s possible when vision meets action—providing vital services in workforce development, health, education, and housing. As we look to the future, our commitment remains unwavering: to empower families, foster healthy lifestyles, and cultivate opportunities for every resident to thrive.
GTFLC Mission & Purpose
Out of concern for growing health disparities between residents of South Hayward and the Alameda County population at large, the concept of the Glad Tidings Family Life Complex (GTFLC) Community Center was inspired by Bishop J. W. Macklin. The Glad Tidings Family Life Complex is designed as a collective of definitive rooms and spaces each with a specified role to strengthen well-being and transform lives. The GTFLC will be a catalyst for community disease prevention and health promotion. The pride and joy of the Glad Tidings Family Life Complex is the Chester McGlockton Wellness Center - a 10,000-square-foot gymnasium for individual and group exercise, team sports, and recreational activities. The late Chester McGlockton, an NFL star and cherished church member, epitomized the spirit of our endeavor, and it is in his honor that we are dedicating the wellness center - a crucial step towards ensuring the health and well-being of all. The GTFLC will also host spaces to accommodate meetings and community activities. There will be a STEM/STEAM Classroom and Training Lab and a Youth (Empowerment) Zone. Additionally, the GTFLC has a commercial-grade kitchen that will support programs providing nutrition education, cooking classes, job training, and small business incubation. The Glad Tidings Family Life Complex broke ground in March 2023 and is slated for completion in September 2024. It will be South Hayward’s community space that is safe, healthy, welcoming, and a place to exercise, learn, play, socialize, and access resources.
